Employment Brief: Simplification of work permit procedures in Slovenia
A number of amendments to the Foreigners Act are coming into force in Slovenia, aimed at simplifying procedures for work permits. Key changes include the following:
- The first uniform residence and work permit can now be issued for up to two years (previously one) and extended for three years (previously two).
- A new temporary residence permit will be available from November 2025 for digital nomads (non-EU/EEA nationals working remotely for a foreign company), provided they can demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves in Slovenia. The permit is valid for one year and non-renewable; however, reapplication is possible six months after expiry.
- Foreigners who are already lawfully residing in Slovenia can now apply for their first temporary residence permit and provide fingerprints directly at an administrative unit in Slovenia, whereas previously they had to apply at a Slovenian embassy or consulate abroad.
Most of the changes will come into effect in the second half of 2025, though certain provision will take effect even later.
