In situations such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, governments are pledging to support businesses which suffer from the public health measures aimed at slowing down the spread of COVID-19.
Generally, EU State aid rules do not allow Member States to favour certain businesses or industries. This paper demonstrates that state aid rules, however, do not necessarily stand in the way of measures that fight the COVID-19 pandemic. This article explains when EU State aid rules apply and helps to navigate through the options on how such aid may be provided in accordance with EU law.
