The 2019/2020 coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has now caused a large number of cities in Europe to be locked down, affecting millions of people and many companies. In particular, air traffic is severely restricted. These developments have also had a massive impact on international trade, e.g. plant shutdowns, restriction or interruption of supply chains and transport routes. This has sparked heated debate as to whether the effects brought about by COVID-19 constitute force majeure and whether, on that basis, companies can claim to be exempted from their contractual obligations.
